How do I implement an effective Internet usage policy in the workplace?

With so much information, products and services now being provided via the internet, the concept of a no access' policy is unrealistic. Whether it's booking a hotel for a business trip, confirming flight times or researching for a report, the internet is the first place to look. It is, therefore, vital to have an acceptable user policy (AUP) that users understand and a have signed up to, generally as part of their employment contract.

What is also important is that the business has also taken steps to protect the individual. Whilst all employers are aware of Health and Safety or Fire Regulations, not enough are aware of the law relating to computer misuse. These laws place a duty of care on the employer to ensure their place of work is free from offensive material etc.

To block inappropriate web content and e-mails requires a filtering product that analyses what comes in and out of the business. These tools also allow a bespoke access scheme to be developed. For example staff may be able to pay utility bills or view sports sites outside core working hours, but be denied adult content at all times.

Filtering products, such as SurfControl are not "big brother". They are recognised as management tools designed to ensure fairness in the workplace. They are not complicated, easy to set up and relatively inexpensive. Indeed they often pay for themselves within six months by saving on network bandwidth and increasing staff productivity.
