I'm fed up receiving SPAM and viruses!

It matters little how much governments pontificate and legislate about SPAM. The reality is that it is here to stay. The only real solution is to filter it in some way before it reaches your employees.

The statistics for 2004 make depressing reading, only 1 in 10 e-mails received via the internet is business related, the rest are rubbish. More worrying, even without there being a virus outbreak in progress, 1 in 16 mails will contain a virus.

There are 2 common solutions to this problem, on-line scanning and in-house scanning. On-line scanning products are generally run as an ASP. Users pay a monthly fee and for this their mail is scanned for spam and viruses. These scans are done by powerful servers on the internet which are updated frequently with new virus and spam signatures. This form of service offers little control over the filtering (as this is done by the ASP provider).

In-house filtering gives the organisation full control of the process. This can be useful for spotting trends or for highlighting users that may be being targeted. In-house filtering also has the added advantage that it can be configured to look at outgoing content thus ensuring you do not lose confidential data or send inappropriate content.

ADA supplies in-house filtering solutions from SurfControl as well as a web based solution from SpamSoap. For further details please contact your local office or look at the appropriate vendor pages. Subscribe to our e-feeds for technical briefings, events, offers and more. Click Here.
